Shri Mahalasa Narayani Mandir

Shri Mahalasa Narayani Mandir, located in Mardol, North Goa, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Mahalasa, who is considered the Mohini avatar of Lord Vishnu.

The temple is known for its rich history and unique traditions, including the presence of a sacred thread worn by the deity, which is typically associated with male gods. The temple complex also houses shrines dedicated to other deities, including Shantadurga and Lakshmi Narayan, adding to its spiritual significance.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the temple is its gigantic brass bell, which historically held legal sanctity under Portuguese rule. The bell was used for testifying, and it was believed that anyone who falsely testified while ringing it would face divine punishment within three days.

The temple also boasts one of the tallest brass lamps in India, further enhancing its grandeur. Originally, the deity was worshipped in Verna, but during Portuguese rule, the idol was moved to Mardol to protect it from destruction. The temple continues to be a significant pilgrimage site, attracting devotees from various communities, including Konkani Saraswat Brahmins and Kshatriyas.
