Shri Shri Hayagriv Madhav Mandir

Shri Shri Hayagriv Madhav Mandir, also known as Hayagriva Madhava Temple, is a significant Hindu temple located in Hajo, Kamrup district, Assam. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Hayagriva Madhava. 

It is situated on the Manikut hill and is believed to have been constructed by King Raghudeva Narayan in 1583. Some historians suggest that the temple was originally built by the Pala dynasty in the 10th century.

The temple is renowned for its architectural beauty, featuring intricate carvings and sculptures. The outer walls of the shrine are adorned with relief figures depicting the ten incarnations of Vishnu, devotees in procession, and scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. 

One of the most striking features of the temple is the continuous row of elephants carved on the lowest level of the temple walls, similar to the stone-cut temples of Ellora.

The temple is also significant for its association with both Hinduism and Buddhism, attracting Buddhist monks from various places. It is believed by some Buddhists that the Hayagriva Madhava Temple is where the Buddha attained Nirvana. The temple hosts several festivals, including Doul Utsav, Bihu, and Janmastami, which are celebrated with great enthusiasm.
