Simlipal Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, covers an area of about 2,750 square kilometers and was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1979. It is part of the Simlipal Tiger Reserve and Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve, known for its rich biodiversity including Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, Indian bison (gaur), and chausingha (four-horned antelope).
The sanctuary features diverse forest types dominated by sal trees and houses over 300 bird species, 55 mammals, and numerous reptiles and butterflies. Its landscape includes high plateaus, dense forests, and notable waterfalls like Barehipani and Joranda. Recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2009, Simlipal is a key tiger habitat and popular for safari tours and nature activities, with the best visiting time from October to March.
