Siwana Fort, located near Balotra in Rajasthan's Barmer district, was built in the 10th century by Veernarayan, the son of the legendary Paramara king Raja Bhoj. The fort was strategically perched on a hill within the Aravalli ranges, serving as a critical defense point with strong fortifications.
It played an important role in medieval Indian history, notably resisting several invasions. In 1308, the fort was besieged by Alauddin Khilji, leading to a fierce battle where the local ruler Sitaldev made a heroic stand before the fort was captured and renamed Khairabad. Later, the Chauhans reclaimed it by defeating the Muslim garrison, after which no ruler from Delhi tried to recapture it.
Over the centuries, Siwana Fort saw various rulers including the Mughals and Rathores, but eventually fell into a state of ruin. The fort is still admired for its historical significance and remnants like a large pond and battlement walls, and an annual fair called Kalyan Singh Ka Mela commemorates the valiant defense of the fort by its earlier inhabitants.
