The temple is famous for its swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of Lord Ganesha, which is believed to have emerged from a well. The idol is surrounded by sacred water from the ancient well, making it a unique and spiritually significant site.
According to legend, the temple was discovered over 1100 years ago when three physically handicapped individuals found the idol while digging a well. The idol is said to be growing in size, and it is believed that this will continue until the end of Kaliyuga, when Lord Ganesha will appear in person. The temple was originally constructed in the early 11th century by the Chola king Kulothunga Chola-I and later expanded by the Vijayanagara dynasty in 1336.
