The Sri Ananthapadmanabha Swamy Lake Temple, also known as the Ananthapura Lake Temple, is a unique Hindu temple located in the village of Ananthapura, near Kumbla in the Kasaragod district of Kerala. This temple is the only lake temple in Kerala and is believed to be the original seat (moolasthanam) of Lord Ananthapadmanabha Swamy, who is also worshipped at the famous Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
The temple is built in the middle of a serene lake, which measures about 2 acres. The sanctum sanctorum is accessed by a small bridge, and the temple features beautiful mural paintings on its outer walls. According to local legend, the deity Ananthapadmanabha Swamy chose to go to Thiruvananthapuram through a cave located in the right corner of the lake.
One of the unique features of the temple is the presence of a vegetarian crocodile named Babia, which is considered the guardian of the temple. The temple is open to devotees from 5:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The major festival celebrated here is Vaarshikothsava, which takes place during the 14th of the Malayalam month Kumba.
