Sulekere
Sulekere, also known as Shanti Sagara, is the second largest man-made lake in Asia, located in the village of Sulekere in Channagiri taluk, Davanagere district, Karnataka. Built in 1128 AD by Princess Shantava, the lake covers about 6,550 acres with a circumference of 30 kilometers, serving as an essential source of irrigation and drinking water for over a thousand nearby villages.
The lake is created by an embankment constructed between two hills, notable for its remarkable width, height, and durability despite centuries of water pressure and floods. It has two sluices, Sidda and Basava, managing water flow, and can be supplemented by surplus water from the nearby Bhadra Dam canal during droughts.
Surrounding the lake are lush hills, and the area features the Siddeshwara temple, making Sulekere both an important agricultural resource and a peaceful tourist spot.
