Surgad
Surgad Fort, located near Roha in Raigad district, Maharashtra, is a historic hill fort built by the Shilahar kings and later controlled by the Nizam of Ahmednagar. It was reconstructed by the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji and played a key role during his reign.
The fort was strategically important as an observation post guarding the trade route along the Kundalika River. During Rajaram's rule, it was captured from the Siddis of Janjira by Shankarji Narayan Sachiv, and later taken over by Bajirao I in 1733, who used it to detain prisoners.
The fort features 17 rock-cut water cisterns, a temple of Veer Maruti, two bastions, and ruins of old buildings. Surrounded by dense teak and dhawda forests, it offers scenic views of the Kundalika River valley and is a popular site for trekking and history enthusiasts.
