Swetaganga Tank
Tourist Attraction
Swetaganga Tank
The Swetaganga Tank, also known as Sweta Ganga, is a sacred water tank located to the west of the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. According to mythology, the tank was created from the nail of Lord Vishnu. It is situated between the Lion's Gate and Swargadwar (the cremation ground).
Pilgrims believe that the water in Swetaganga Tank is sacred and has an internal connection with the river Ganga. Before visiting Lord Jagannath, pilgrims often take a bath in the sea and then bathe in Swetaganga Tank. The tank is also one of the Panchatirthas (five sacred bathing places) of Puri.
On the banks of the tank, there are two small temples dedicated to Sweta Madhava and Matsya Madhava. The tank is believed to never dry up, as it is said that Ganga Devi herself resides here in the form of Swetaganga.
