Built originally in the 12th century by King Bheemdev, it served primarily as a watchtower to monitor trade routes. The fort holds a rich history, having been under the control of the Marathas, Portuguese, and eventually the British, who used it as a prison.
It played a role in the Battle of Vasai in 1739 when Marathas captured it from the Portuguese, and later it came under British control in 1817. Today, the fort is in ruins with remnants of walls, cannons, and 32 rock-cut water cisterns.
