Tera Fort
Tera Fort is an ancient fortress located near the village of Tera in the Abdasa region of Kutch, Gujarat, about 85km west of Bhuj. Built during the early 18th century by a chief of the Jadeja Rajput dynasty, the fort was originally a strategic stronghold overlooking the plains and nearby lakes. Tera Fort played a significant role in local history, especially during the reign of Deshalji I, when it was granted as the estate of Tera.
The fort suffered major damage in the mid-18th century during a conflict between its chief and the Rao of Kutch, marking one of the first uses of artillery in the region’s wars. Despite further damage from the 1819 Rann of Kutch earthquake, repairs over time have preserved much of its structure. The Jadeja Rajputs, known for their lineage traced to Lord Krishna, ruled large parts of Gujarat including Kutch for centuries.
Today, Tera Fort stands as a symbol of the area’s resilient past, featuring imposing walls and providing insight into the history and heritage of Kachchh, and it is now a lesser-known but intriguing destination for visitors interested in the cultural legacy of the Jadeja rulers and the unique landscape of Kutch.
