Thattekkad
Thattekkad, officially known as the Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary or Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is located near Kothamangalam in Ernakulam district, Kerala, covering about 25 square kilometers along the Periyar River. It is Kerala's first bird sanctuary and was established thanks to the efforts of renowned ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, who called it the richest bird habitat in peninsular India.
The sanctuary features moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests and hosts over 250 species of birds, including rare and endemic species such as the Sri Lankan Frogmouth, Malabar Grey Hornbill, and Malabar Parakeet. Besides birds, the sanctuary is home to various mammals like elephants, leopards, and sloth bears, along with reptiles and butterflies. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching, boating on the Periyar, and nature walks, particularly from February to July, when the weather is favorable for these activities.
