Thayumanavar Temple Teppakulam

Thayumanavar Temple, located within the Rockfort complex in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Thayumanavar, meaning "The God who became a mother."

The temple’s legend tells of Shiva taking the form of a mother to help a devoted pregnant woman, symbolizing his divine compassion. Built originally by the Pallavas and later enhanced by the Pandyas, Cholas, Nayaks, and Vijayanagara rulers, this temple showcases classic Dravidian rock-cut architecture carved into the 273-foot-high Rockfort hill. It features shrines for Shiva and his consort Parvati, with intricate carvings and sculptures, including representations of deities and mythological figures, spread across multiple mandapas (halls).

The temple is a vital cultural and spiritual site, hosting six daily rituals and twelve annual festivals, with the Chittirai festival being a significant event. The temple complex also includes the nearby Teppakulam, a large temple tank used for float festivals and surrounded by bazaars, making it a centerpiece of religious and community life in the city.
