Thiruvalluvar Statue
The Thiruvalluvar Statue in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, is a magnificent 41-meter-tall stone sculpture of the Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar, the author of the ancient Tamil work Thirukkural.
The statue is located on a small island near the town of Kanyakumari, where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean meet. It was sculpted by Indian sculptor V. Ganapati Sthapati and was unveiled on January 1, 2000, by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi.
The statue stands on a 38-foot pedestal, representing the 38 chapters of virtue in the Thirukkural, and the combined height of the statue and pedestal is 133 feet, symbolizing the 133 chapters of the text. The statue itself represents the second and third books of the Thirukkural, namely Wealth and Love.
The right hand of the statue, with three fingers pointing skywards, signifies the three cantos of the Kural text: Virtue, Wealth, and Love.
