Trikuta Wildlife Sanctuary
Trikuta Wildlife Sanctuary is located near Katra in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, covering around 27 to 32 square kilometers. It is situated adjacent to the Vaishno Devi shrine, one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India. The sanctuary, established in 1981, features mixed coniferous forests including species like kail pine, spruce, fir, juniper, and deodar, supporting diverse flora and fauna typical of the region.
However, the sanctuary has faced de-notification by the Supreme Court to allow development around the Vaishno Devi shrine, which has impacted its protected status. Despite this, the area historically played a role in wildlife conservation and contained species like musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and other Himalayan fauna. The sanctuary was less commercialized and accessed mostly by pilgrims visiting the shrine while also offering natural habitat which is yet to be developed fully for tourism.
