Tung Fort
Tung Fort, also known as Kathingad (meaning "difficult fort" in Marathi), is a historic hill fort located in the Pune district of Maharashtra. Situated at an elevation of 1,075 meters (3,527 feet) above sea level, it is about 12 kilometers from Malavli railway station and can also be approached from Lonavala. Since the construction of Pawna Dam, the fort is surrounded by water on three sides.
The fort was built before 1600 CE by the Adil Shahi dynasty and later captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It served as a watchtower, providing a strategic vantage point over the Maval region and the Pawna and Mulshi valleys. The fort has a conical shape with steep climbs and narrow pathways, making the trek challenging but rewarding.
At the summit, visitors can explore the ruins of a temple, a water reservoir, and enjoy panoramic views of nearby forts like Lohagad, Visapur, Tikona, and Korigad.
The trek to Tung Fort is popular among adventure enthusiasts, especially during the monsoon season when the surrounding hills are lush and green.
