Tuppada Kola
Tuppada Kola is a significant hill located within the Chitradurga Fort in Karnataka. The fort, known for its seven concentric ramparts, is classified as a "Giridurga," meaning a hill fort. Tuppada Kola is surrounded by other notable hills such as Hidimbeshwara Hill, Shivalaya Hill, Kahalebatheri Hill, and Lal-batheri Hill, forming a fortified region referred to as Meldurga or the upper fort.
The entire fortified area is approximately 300 meters above ground level and is circular in design. Chitradurga Fort, historically known as Chitrakaldurga, was built in stages between the 11th and 13th centuries by the Chalukyas and Hoysalas, later expanded by the Nayakas of Chitradurga. The fort is renowned for its strategic military planning, with 19 main entrances, 38 wicket entrances, 35 portholes, and four secret entrances.
It also houses 14 major temples, including the Hidimbeshwara Temple, Ekanatheshwari Temple, and Sampige Siddeshwara Temple. The fort’s architecture and water harvesting system reflect the ingenuity of its builders, ensuring a continuous water supply despite its elevated location.
