Turtle Wildlife Sanctuary
The Turtle Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Varanasi district, Uttar Pradesh, is India's first freshwater turtle sanctuary, created along a 7-kilometer stretch of the Ganga River from Ramnagar Fort to Malviya Rail/Road Bridge.
Established in 1989 as part of the Ganga Action Plan, the sanctuary aims to ensure the survival of turtles released into the river to naturally decompose half-burnt human remains, maintaining river cleanliness. The sanctuary supports several turtle species, including carnivorous and herbivorous types, along with fish like rohu and tengra, and is also home to the Gangetic dolphin, particularly visible during the rainy season.
Turtles hatchlings are reared at a breeding center in Sarnath before being released into the river. Efforts to protect the sanctuary include bans on fishing and sand mining within this stretch to preserve the habitat critical for the turtles’ survival and breeding.
