Udayagiri Fort Kanyakumari
Udayagiri Fort, located near Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, was originally built in the 17th century and later rebuilt by Maharaja Marthanda Varma of Travancore in the 18th century under the supervision of Dutch naval commander Eustachius De Lannoy.
The fort spans about 90 acres, including an isolated hillock, and served as a key military barracks for the Travancore rulers when Padmanabhapuram was their capital. It features robust granite walls, watchtowers, underground tunnels, and an old gun foundry. De Lannoy, who modernized the Travancore army, is buried within the fort, and his tomb with a stone cross bearing inscriptions in Tamil and Latin is a notable landmark.
The fort also contains ruins of British-era barracks, granaries, and an Elephant Yard used for training war elephants. Surrounded by lush greenery, the fort offers panoramic views of the Western Ghats and is a blend of indigenous and European architectural styles, reflecting its rich history and cultural significance.
