Unchagaon fort

Fort Unchagaon is a historic mud fort located in the village of Unchagaon near Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, about 110 km from Delhi. It was originally established around four centuries ago by Rajput chiefs of the Sisodiya/Gehlot clan. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British authorities gifted the fort to Raja Gursahai Singh for his loyalty.

The fort’s architecture features thick brick and lime mortar ramparts about two meters wide, bastioned turrets, and narrow gun holes for muskets and small cannon. The central courtyard and the imposing white façade are characteristic of the structure, which combines defensive and residential elements. Surendra Pal Singh, the great nephew of Raja Gursahai Singh, inherited the fort as a child in the early 20th century and led its renovation in 1933 following his marriage into the royal family of Bharatpur, Rajasthan.

Today, a part of the fort serves as a heritage resort with modern amenities, maintaining the blend of 19th and early 20th century Indian and colonial architectural influences. The fort is surrounded by lush mango groves and offers various activities, including river dolphin spotting along the nearby Ganges River, which enhances its appeal as a serene heritage getaway close to Delhi. Some sections of the palace remain a residence for the descendants, preserving its living history.
