The Upper Lake, also known as Bhojtal, is a magnificent artificial lake located on the western side of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the oldest man-made lakes in the state and serves as a major source of drinking water for the city, providing around 30 million gallons of water per day.
The lake was commissioned by the Paramara ruler Raja Bhoj in the 11th century to cure his skin disease, as per local folklore. The lake was created by combining water from 365 tributaries, with the help of a Gond commander named Kalia who revealed the location of an invisible river.
Upper Lake is surrounded by Van Vihar National Park on the south, human settlements on the east and north, and agricultural fields on the west. It is separated from the Lower Lake (Chhota Talab) by a bridge called Pul Pukhta. The lake is also home to various water sports activities, including boating, parasailing, kayaking, canoeing, and rafting.
