Bapatla is a town and the administrative headquarters of Bapatla district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The district was officially formed on April 4, 2022, carved out from parts of the erstwhile Prakasam and Guntur districts. Historically, Bapatla was originally called Bhavapuri, later evolving to Bhavapatla and finally Bapatla, named after the Bhavanarayana Swamy temple.

The Bapatla Taluka was created in 1794, and the town played a significant role during the Indian independence movement, notably with the Chirala-Perala movement of 1919. The first Andhra Mahasabha meeting in 1913, which advocated the formation of a separate state for Andhras, was held here.

Geographically, Bapatla district is located in coastal Andhra Pradesh and is bounded by Guntur district to the north, Krishna district to the east, the Bay of Bengal to the south, and Palnadu and Prakasam districts to the west. The district covers an area of about 3,828.84 square kilometers. It experiences an average annual rainfall of 925.3 mm, with generally fertile soils, primarily black cotton soil and sandy loamy soil. Natural resources include sand and gravel reserves and deposits of colored granites.
