Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar, formerly known as Nawanshahr, is a city located in the state of Punjab, India. The city was renamed in honor of the Indian revolutionary, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, who was born in the nearby village of Khatkar Kalan. The city is located about 80 kilometers from the state capital of Chandigarh and is an important commercial and cultural center in the region.
The history of Nawanshahr dates back to the 15th century when it was ruled by the Bhatti Rajputs. The city was later conquered by the Mughals and became part of the Sikh Empire in the 18th century. During the British Raj, Nawanshahr was part of the district of Jalandhar and was a center for the Indian independence movement.
