The palace is closely linked to India's independence movement, as it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, his secretary Mahadev Desai, and other prominent leaders during the Quit India Movement. Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai passed away within the palace premises, and their memorials, designed by the renowned architect Charles Correa, are located here.
