The Agri Horticultural Society of India in Kolkata, founded in 1820 by Reverend Dr. William Carey, is one of the oldest institutions dedicated to the promotion and development of agriculture and horticulture in India. Established with support from the Governor-General and other prominent patrons, it played a pioneering role in introducing and nurturing various crops such as maize, cotton, tea, sugarcane, and cinchona, and promoting plantation agriculture across the country.
The Society acted as the de facto agricultural department of India until 1900, fostering research, education, and exhibitions including the first flower and vegetable shows and the first agricultural journal. It has greenhouses, botanical gardens, research labs, and a rich collection of plants, continuing to promote plant conservation, horticultural education, and agri-business development with a legacy spanning more than two centuries.
