Ajinkyatara Fort, perched at an altitude of about 3,300 feet on one of the seven mountains surrounding Satara city in Maharashtra, is a historic hill fort known as the "Fort of the Sapta-Rishi." Originally built in the 12th century by Raja Bhoj of the Shilahara dynasty, it came under Maratha control in 1673 when Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured it from the Bijapur Sultanate.
The fort has witnessed significant events in Maratha history, including defense against Mughal invasions and being renamed "Ajinkyatara," meaning "The Invincible Star," by Tarabai, a Maratha queen. It features thick defensive walls, water tanks, and temples dedicated to Devi Mangalai, Lord Shankar, and Lord Hanuman inside its premises.
The fort offers panoramic views of Satara city and serves as a popular trekking destination suitable for beginners. Ajinkyatara Fort symbolizes Maratha valor and strategic importance and remains a prominent heritage site attracting tourists, especially from November to February when weather conditions are favorable.
