Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Anamalai Tiger Reserve or Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, is located in the Anamalai Hills of Tamil Nadu near Coimbatore. It spans about 1,480 square kilometers, including a core and buffer area, and lies within the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sanctuary features diverse vegetation types such as evergreen forests, deciduous forests, shola forests, grasslands, and marshy areas.
It is rich in biodiversity, hosting over 2,000 plant species including many medicinal plants. The reserve is home to many animal species, including the Bengal tiger, Asiatic elephant, Indian leopard, Nilgiri langur, gaur, spotted deer, and lion-tailed macaque. Several indigenous tribal communities live in and around the sanctuary. It offers opportunities for wildlife watching, trekking, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Western Ghats.
