It was the first British trade settlement in Kerala and served as a crucial hub for the pepper and cotton cloth trade, as well as a primary military outpost and ammunition store during conflicts like the Anglo-Mysore Wars.
The square fort, made of laterite and lime mortar, features four bastions equipped with cannons and was the first signaling station for ships arriving from Britain. It witnessed early resistance against British rule, marking one of the first rebellions in India.
Today, the fort stands well-preserved with high rampart walls, offering panoramic views of the sea and surrounding coastal village, and it remains a significant colonial historical site and tourist attraction near Varkala.
