Arabithittu Wildlife Sanctuary
Arabithittu Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Mysuru (Mysore) district of Karnataka, was officially declared a wildlife sanctuary on April 30, 1985. It covers a relatively small area of about 13.5 to 14 square kilometers and is also known as the Hunsur Territorial Range. The sanctuary features dry deciduous forests, tropical secondary scrub, and extensive plantations of eucalyptus and sandalwood.
It serves as a diverse habitat supporting various wildlife including leopards, spotted deer, wild pigs, foxes, porcupines, hares, and common mongooses. The sanctuary is especially notable for its rich avian population, with over 230 species of birds recorded, making it an important site for birdwatching and conservation of migratory and resident bird species.
The sanctuary is surrounded by agricultural fields and includes scrub forests, contributing to its ecological diversity. It is accessible from Mysuru city and nearby K R Nagar railway station, with the best visiting season from December to February. Facilities include watchtowers for wildlife viewing and possible camping with permission.
