Aralam

Aralam is a hill station and wildlife sanctuary located in the Kannur district of Kerala. The sanctuary, established in 1984, spans about 55 square kilometers on the western slopes of the Western Ghats, making it the northernmost wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. It is characterized by its rich biodiversity with dense tropical and semi-evergreen forests, teak and eucalyptus plantations, and varied terrain including hills and valleys.

The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of animals such as elephants, leopards, jungle cats, deer, bison, and langurs, as well as over 180 species of birds like hornbills. Trekking is a popular activity here, with trails leading to scenic spots like the Meenmutty waterfalls and the Pothenplavu watchtower, offering panoramic views of the forests and the Western Ghats. The area is also noted for its butterfly population, and visitors often enjoy jeep rides and nature watching.

Aralam village nearby is situated close to rivers and has a diverse population, with a strong emphasis on conservation and eco-tourism. The best time to visit is from November to May, when the weather is optimal for outdoor activities and wildlife spotting.
