Arignar Anna Zoological Park, also known as Vandalur Zoo, is one of the largest zoos in South Asia, located in Vandalur near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Established in 1855 by Edward Balfour as Madras Zoo, it was India’s first public zoo and among the earliest in the world.
Due to space constraints and urban development, it was shifted to a much larger site in the Vandalur Reserve Forest in 1976, officially opening there in 1985. The zoo covers about 602 hectares (1,490 acres) and houses over 2,300 animals from 172 species, displayed in naturalistic enclosures.
