Auwa
Auwa is a historic village in the Pali district of Rajasthan, known for its ancient 11th-century Lord Shiva temple called Kameshwar Mahadev. The village gained fame during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 when the Rajputs of the region, led by Thakur Kushal Singh Rathore, fiercely resisted British forces in the siege of Auwa Fort.
This battle, known as the "Battle of Blacks and Whites," saw the British army laying siege to the fort for several days, during which Captain Mason was killed for insulting the Thakur, and his severed head was hung at the fort gate. The British destroyed the fort, palace, temples, and idols, but Auwa's legacy as a symbol of resistance remains strong, with parts of the fort now converted into a hotel and a memorial established for Kushal Singh.
The village retains its cultural and historical significance as a key site in Rajasthan's freedom struggle.
