The name Ayyankunnu comes from the five hills ("Anchu Kunnu") surrounding the village.
The terrain is undulating with dense forests toward the eastern border adjoining the state of Karnataka. The local economy relies heavily on plantations of rubber, coconut, and areca nut, although the region was affected by landslides during the 2018 Kerala floods.
Ayyankunnu is governed by a Gram Panchayat and has a high literacy rate of above 95%. The village is connected by public and private bus services, with the nearest railway station located over 10 kilometers away, and the closest international airport being Kannur International Airport.
