Badami Fort
Badami Fort, situated in Bagalkot district of Karnataka, is a historic hill fortress built in the 6th century CE by the Chalukya dynasty, specifically under King Pulakeshin I.
It served as the capital of the early Chalukyas and was a strategic military stronghold due to its elevated position on two rocky hills overlooking the town and Agastya Lake. The fort features extensive fortifications like thick walls, bastions, gates, and observation posts, along with rock-cut passages and carved chambers including watchtowers, tunnels, prisons, and temples.
Notable within the fort are two Shivalaya temples with intricate carvings, some dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva, showcasing the architectural and religious heritage of the era. Over time, successive rulers including the Vijayanagara Empire, Bahmani and Adil Shahi sultans, and Tipu Sultan modified the fort.
Today it is a protected monument maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and stands as a testament to the Chalukyas' architectural innovation and historical significance in the Deccan region.
