Balapur Fort is a historic Mughal-era fortress located in Balapur town of Akola district, Maharashtra. Its construction began in 1721 under Mirza Azam Shah, son of Emperor Aurangzeb, and was completed in 1757 by Ismaeel Khan, the Nawab of Ellichpur. The fort is strategically situated on elevated ground between the Man and Mhais rivers, which sometimes surround the fort with floodwaters during rains except at a single point.
It features very high walls and large curved bastions made with strong brickwork, designed for military defense. The fort has three gateways arranged one inside the other, with the outer fort forming a decagon and the inner fort a pentagon, each corner fortified with bastions. The thick innermost walls are pierced with numerous slits to allow the discharge of missiles and ammunition.
Inside the fort grounds are three wells, a mosque, and a temple dedicated to Bala Devi, the deity after whom the town is named. Originally a major military station of the Mughals, the fort is well preserved and currently used for some government offices, representing a fine example of Indo-Islamic architecture and Mughal military engineering in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
