Ballari Fort
The Ballari Fort, also known as Bellary Fort, is a historic fortification situated on top of Ballari Gudda (Fort Hill) in the city of Ballari, Karnataka. Built during the Vijayanagara period by the Palegar chief Hanumappa Nayaka, the fort was later renovated and modified by Hyder Ali in the 18th century with the help of a French engineer. The fort is divided into two parts: the Upper Fort and the Lower Fort.
The Upper Fort houses a citadel, a temple, barracks for soldiers, and deep wells for water storage. The Lower Fort features two entrance gates, several bastions, and deep pits often filled with water and infested with crocodiles to deter enemy soldiers. The fort also has the Kote Anjaneya Temple (Hanuman Temple) within its premises.
