The Bandra-Worli Sea Link, officially known as the Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, is a 5.6-kilometer-long, eight-lane cable-stayed bridge that connects Bandra in Mumbai's Western Suburbs to Worli in South Mumbai. Commissioned by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation and built by Hindustan Construction Company, it was completed and partially opened in 2009, with all lanes operational by March 2010.
The bridge was constructed to alleviate traffic congestion on the Mahim Causeway, reducing travel time between Bandra and Worli from 20-30 minutes to about 10 minutes during peak hours. It features a striking design with a single 128-meter-high “Namaste-shaped” pylon and uses advanced construction techniques like large-diameter pile foundations and high-performance concrete.
Considered an engineering marvel and a symbol of Mumbai’s progress, it also enhances the cityscape and has become a notable landmark and tourist attraction, offering scenic views of the Arabian Sea and the Mumbai skyline.
