The island stands at an elevation of 45 to 50 meters above sea level and covers an area of approximately 19 hectares. It is surrounded by the Arabian Sea and is accessible by boat from Honnavar or nearby villages.
The island is named after the Basavaraja Durga Fort, which was built during the Vijayanagara rule in 1690 and later captured by Keladi king Shivappa Nayaka, who named it after the Keladi prince Basavaraja. The fort is constructed using laterite blocks and features remnants of eight mounted guns, adding to its historical significance.
The island is known for its lush vegetation, golden-hued dry grasses, and fresh water wells, making it a unique natural retreat. It is particularly popular during the festival of Makar Sankranti, when visitors are allowed to enter the island for religious and cultural celebrations.
Due to its remote location and historical importance, the island is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and is generally restricted to visitors except on special occasions.
