Belapur Fort is a 16th-century fort near the township of Belapur in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, originally built by the Siddis of Janjira. It changed hands several times, being conquered by the Portuguese, then the Marathas under Chimaji Appa, who renamed it Belapur after his vow involving a garland of beli leaves placed in a nearby temple.
The British took control of the fort in 1817 and partially destroyed it as part of their policy to weaken Maratha strongholds. The fort is located on a hillock near Panvel Creek and once had five bastions, 20 cannons, and possibly tunnels connecting to other forts. Today, the fort is mostly in ruins, with some walls and two bastions still intact. It offers a glimpse into the region's rich history and scenic views but is not widely developed or promoted as a major tourist attraction.
