Bhartrihari Caves

Bhartrihari Caves in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, are a historical and spiritual site located near the banks of the Shipra River. Named after the renowned poet and ascetic Bhartrihari, these caves are believed to be the place where he renounced his royal life and meditated for twelve years. Bhartrihari, the stepbrother of King Vikramaditya, was a scholar known for his works on love, renunciation, and ethics.

The caves, dating back to the 11th century, feature narrow entrances and stone pillars, with multiple rooms housing idols and images of Hindu deities. Inside, visitors can see a stone-carved statue of Bhartrihari in a meditative posture, along with Mahadeva’s trident and sacred ash known as Dhuni.

The site holds deep spiritual significance, attracting devotees and saints from the Nath community who often pitch tents outside the caves for meditation. The caves are open to visitors from 6 AM to 9 PM, and entry is free, making it an accessible destination for those seeking a blend of history and spirituality.

Situated near Gadkalika Temple, Bhartrihari Caves remain an important landmark in Ujjain, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike.
