Bhimgad Fort
Bhimgad Fort in Belagavi (Belgaum), Karnataka, was built in the 17th century by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as a defensive stronghold against the Portuguese forces in nearby Goa. The fort is situated inside the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a part of the Western Ghats and was declared a sanctuary in 2011. The fort stands atop a steep rock plateau around 1800 feet high, with natural defenses formed by cliffs and minimal need for artificial fortifications.
Today, the fort’s ruins include large walls, freshwater ponds, and remnants of cannons, retaining much of its historical significance. The surrounding sanctuary is known for its rich biodiversity including rare species such as the Wroughton's free-tailed bat, Malabar grey hornbill, tigers, leopards, and sloth bears, as well as being an important tiger corridor.
This area features diverse topography with hills, valleys, and plateaus and serves as the headwaters for several rivers including the Mhadei. The fort and sanctuary together represent a unique blend of natural beauty, wildlife conservation, and historic heritage.
