Bihu Loukon
Bihu Loukon is an ancient star-shaped mud fort located in the Maklang region of Imphal West district in Manipur. Discovered in 2013 through satellite imagery, it covers an area of about five to six hectares and features eight triangular arms with thick mud ramparts approximately 15 feet thick and 5 feet high.
The fort is believed to have been constructed with military strategy in mind, possibly to defend against invasions, with twin mud ramparts and waterways surrounding it. Locals knew of the mud walls but were unaware of the star-shaped design, only visible from above.
The fort holds cultural significance as it reflects the sacred drawing of Ibudhou Pakhangba, a supreme deity in Meitei religion. Research continues to determine the exact age of the fort using radiometric dating, but it is considered older than the nearby Kangla Fort. The site has been declared a protected historical monument by the government of Manipur.
