Bori Wildlife Sanctuary

Bori Wildlife Sanctuary in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh is one of India's oldest protected areas, established around the historic Bori Reserve Forest in 1865. It covers about 646 square kilometers in the northern foothills of the Satpura Range and borders the Satpura National Park and Tawa River.

The sanctuary is part of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve and is noted for its rich biodiversity with mixed deciduous and bamboo forests featuring trees like teak, dhaora, and tendu. It serves as an important habitat for large mammals including tigers, leopards, gaur, sambar, chital, and wild boar, along with smaller mammals like flying squirrels and Indian porcupines.

The area also supports over 230 bird species, making it a prime destination for wildlife and bird enthusiasts. In recent years, successful village relocations within the sanctuary have created meadows that promote wildlife repopulation, including efforts to reintroduce the endangered hard-ground barasingha deer.

The sanctuary offers big-game safaris and walking tours, providing excellent opportunities to see predators like tiger, leopard, sloth bear, and wild dog as well as a variety of herbivores and rich flora. Its combination of natural beauty, ecological significance, and conservation history makes Bori a notable wildlife destination in central India.
