Brabourne Stadium (Cricket)
Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Maharashtra, is one of India's oldest and most historic cricket grounds, established in 1937 on land reclaimed from the sea. Named after Lord Brabourne, then Governor of Bombay, the stadium was officially opened with a match between the Cricket Club of India (CCI) and Lord Tennyson's team.
With a seating capacity of about 20,000, it has been the home ground for Mumbai cricket and the CCI. The stadium hosted its first Test match in 1948 between India and West Indies and was Mumbai’s primary international venue until the early 1970s, after which the Wankhede Stadium took over that role due to disputes between the CCI and the Bombay Cricket Association.
Although it then primarily hosted first-class matches, international cricket returned occasionally, including hosting matches during the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy and the first T20 International in India in 2007. Brabourne Stadium is also known for its multi-sport facilities and has witnessed legendary cricketing records, including Sachin Tendulkar’s first double century in first-class cricket.
