Burhanpur Fort
Burhanpur Fort, also known as Shahi Qila, is a historic fort located in the city of Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh. It dates back to the 15th century and was originally built by the rulers of the Faruqi dynasty.
The fort became prominent during the Mughal era when it served as a significant outpost and residence for Mughal emperors, especially Shah Jahan. He extensively contributed to the fort's architecture, adding features like the Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas. The royal bath (hamam) in the fort, built for Shah Jahan's wife Mumtaz Mahal, is notable for its exquisite paintings and intricate carvings.
Mumtaz Mahal died in Burhanpur while giving birth to her fourteenth child and was initially buried at the fort before her remains were moved to the Taj Mahal in Agra, for which the fort's bath is said to have inspired the design elements. Although much of the fort is now in ruins, it remains an important symbol of the city's rich history and Mughal heritage.
