Chachaura Fort
Chachaura Fort, also known as Champavati Fort, is a historic 17th-century fort located in Chachaura city of Guna district, Madhya Pradesh. It was built by Raja Vikram Singh of the Khinchi dynasty and named after his queen, Rani Champavati.
The fort is situated on a hilltop overlooking the city, covering about one hectare, with high fortification walls and strong bastions. Famous for its tragic history, during the British attack led by officer John Bettis, the king was killed, and rather than surrender, Rani Champavati sacrificed her life by jumping into a 50-meter deep well inside the fort.
The fort has been preserved and restored by the Madhya Pradesh state archaeology department and remains the only fort in the state named after a woman. Visitors can still see remnants of the queen’s handprints on the walls, adding to its historical and cultural significance.
