Chandragiri Fort, located near the town of Chandragiri in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, is a historically significant site that dates back to the 11th century. Originally built by the Yadavaraya dynasty, the fort later became an important stronghold of the Vijayanagara Empire.
Following the Battle of Talikota in 1565, the Vijayanagara rulers shifted their capital from Hampi to Chandragiri, marking the fort’s rise to prominence. The fort is divided into two sections: the Lower Fort and the Upper Fort. The Lower Fort houses the Raja Mahal and Rani Mahal, both showcasing Indo-Islamic and Vijayanagara architectural styles.
The Raja Mahal, a three-story structure, features pyramidal towers resembling temple shikharas and now serves as an archaeological museum displaying sculptures, coins, and historical artifacts. The Rani Mahal, a two-story building, is believed to have been the residence of a military commander.
