The Chatham Saw Mill, situated on Chatham Island in South Andaman, is a historic landmark and one of the largest and oldest sawmills in Asia. Established in 1883 by the British, the mill was initially set up to meet the local demand for timber and construction materials.
The mill played a crucial role in the development of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the colonial era. The sawmill is connected to Port Blair by a 100-meter-long bridge, making it easily accessible for visitors.
The Forest Department now manages the mill and maintains a Forest Museum on the premises. The museum showcases various exhibits, including wood carvings, wooden furniture, and historical photographs, providing insights into the island's timber industry and its history.
Visitors can take a tour of the mill and observe the process of converting raw wood into finished products. The mill also has a bomb pit created during World War II, which has since been filled with water.
