Chawk Masjid

Chawk Masjid, located in Murshidabad, West Bengal, is a significant historical monument that reflects the grandeur of the Nawabi era. Constructed in 1767 AD by Munny Begum, the wife of Nawab Mir Jafar, the mosque stands as a testament to the architectural and cultural heritage of the time. The site where Chawk Masjid now stands was previously occupied by the "Chahel Sutan," a forty-pillared audience hall built by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan. The name "Chawk Masjid" is derived from the surrounding market area, known as "Chawk," which means a shopping place or market. This market, which still exists today, was the principal market of Murshidabad during the Nawabi era. Chawk Masjid holds a special place in the history of Murshidabad, not only for its architectural beauty but also for its association with significant historical figures and events. Munny Begum, who commissioned the mosque, was a prominent figure during the Nawabi period and was known for her generosity and close ties with British officials like Robert Clive and Warren Hastings. Today, Chawk Masjid remains a revered site, attracting visitors who are keen to explore its historical and architectural splendor. Although it is generally closed throughout the year, the mosque opens its doors during major Islamic festivals such as Eid Ul Fitr and Eid-ul-Zoha, allowing the faithful to gather and pray.
