The sanctuary was originally a private garden called "Quail's Garden" and was later renamed "Abhay Aranya" or Sanctuary in 1982. In 2005, the West Bengal State Government took over the sanctuary and renamed it in honor of the renowned Indian sculptor Chintamoni Kar.
The sanctuary is now a popular spot for visitors to observe and photograph the diverse bird species and colorful butterflies that inhabit the area.
